DonorCentral: Allow Donor to Create Account, Create Fund, Make Contribution, Add Contribution to Fund

Commercial DAFs, like Fidelity, are becoming increasingly popular with a generation of donors who are non-traditional. These non-traditional donors want to make a philanthropic impact, but lack the means to give large gifts at this specific point in their lives.

Because commercial DAFs, like Fidelity, allow the prospective donor to setup everything online and provide a smaller contribution, many non-traditional donors are investing with a commercial DAF to help make their philanthropic impact.

Below is the workflow a prospective donor could follow in DonorCentral:

  • Create an account in DonorCentral
  • Create a fund (name it)
  • Make a contribution via credit card, ACH, other
  • Add that contribution to a fund
  • Make grants from that fund

The contribution dollar threshold would be lower to position Community Foundations to compete with commercial DAFs. However this functionality would allow Community Foundations to compete with commercial DAFs, expand their target audience and cultivate these non-traditional donors as they expand their philanthropic mission.

Is there interest in workflow that would support the above use case? Please comment and/or vote if you're interested!

Thanks Sally! Please pass along the idea. I might also re-port it. Have a great weekend!

Collin, these are great ideas - if the workflow allowed clients to select which they wanted (if you don't want to allow "create a new fund" but you do want to allow make a contribution) that would be even better!  I have had to login a few different times to get this comment to work.  I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more traction, maybe it needs to be reposted or sent to user list?
